David McRaney has an interesting interview with head of “People Services” at Google, on the “You Are Not So Smart” podcast. In it, they talk about how managers at Google do not have the ability to hire, fire, review or alter the pay of their employees. They have other systems in place to handle those aspects. Instead, managers are there to make sure the employees have what they need to be productive and happy.
